Health & Safety Manager SHEQ
Salary/Rate:£50,000 – £55,000/annum Flexible Salary + 33 Days Holiday
An exciting time to join this well-established business during a time of growth and expansion, this is a key Management Role within the organisation (currently c.50 staff) where you will have the opportunity to make a real difference and would suit someone who takes pride in their work and care about everything SHEQ ideally from a minerals or similar background.
You will need to have your own transprot as we are based in a rural location between Matlock and Ashbourne.
Job Purpose:
To ensure the effective management of Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) standards within mineral processing operations. The role focuses on aligning practices with ISO standards, especially ISO 45001:2018 for occupational health and safety, ensuring regulatory compliance, mitigating risks, and driving continuous improvement across safety, environmental, and quality systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety and Health Management (ISO 45001:2018)
- Maintain and develop and Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) aligned with ISO 45001:2018 requirements.
- Conduct gap analyses to ensure ongoing compliance with ISO 45001:2018 standards and recommend improvements.
- Identify and assess hazards in mineral processing activities (e.g., heavy machinery, hazardous chemicals, working at height).
- Develop & maintain risk assessments across all aspects of the site.
- Lead investigations into safety incidents or near-misses and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Promote a proactive safety culture by engaging employees at all levels and fostering ownership of safety responsibilities.
- Develop and oversee emergency preparedness plans, including drills for scenarios such as chemical spills, equipment failure, or fire.
Environmental Management (ISO 14001:2015)
- Maintain an Environmental Management System (EMS) aligned with ISO 14001:2015.
- Oversee compliance with environmental legislation related to waste management, emissions control, and resource conservation in mineral processing.
- Manage environmental impact assessments and develop action plans to mitigate risks related to waste, resource use, & energy.
- Lead initiatives to minimise the plant’s environmental footprint, such as recycling, energy efficiency programs, and pollution prevention measures.
- Packaging waste compliance.
Quality Assurance (ISO 9001:2015)
- Develop, implement, and manage a Quality Management System (QMS) based on ISO 9001:2015.
- Ensure processed mineral products meet client specifications and industry standards.
- Conduct regular internal and external quality audits and resolve non-conformities.
- Collaborate with production teams to optimise workflows and maintain consistent product quality.
Training and Awareness
- Plan and deliver comprehensive SHEQ training programs tailored to the mineral processing industry, emphasising ISO 45001:2018, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001.
- Enhance employee awareness of SHEQ standards and responsibilities through workshops, toolbox talks, and onboarding sessions.
- Stay updated on changes in ISO standards, legislation, and industry best practices and communicate these to relevant teams.
Reporting and Compliance
- Prepare and present regular SHEQ performance reports, including KPIs related to safety incidents, environmental impact, and product quality.
- Maintain detailed documentation for ISO certifications, audits, and compliance activities.
- Liaise with regulatory authorities and external auditors to ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
Leadership and Collaboration
- Lead cross-functional teams to address SHEQ challenges and drive improvement projects.
- Work closely with engineering, production, and maintenance teams to integrate SHEQ considerations into operational planning.
- Foster a workplace culture of accountability and excellence in SHEQ practices.
Key Requirements:
Education and Qualifications
Certifications such as ISO 45001:2018 Lead Auditor, NEBOSH, or equivalent qualifications.
Additional certifications in ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015 are advantageous.
Experience
At least 5 years of SHEQ management experience in the mineral processing, mining, or heavy industry sector.
Proven experience implementing and maintaining ISO 45001:2018, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 9001:2015 systems.
Strong background in conducting risk assessments, audits, and incident investigations.
Skills
In-depth knowledge of ISO 45001:2018 and its application to high-risk industrial environments.
Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
Proficiency in SHEQ reporting.
Ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams.
